The Wonderful Wizard of Sade

We think the cover of this book by N.C. belongs in the dictionary next to the definition of gallows humor. As for the text… it was written by Derek Pell, author of Morbid Curiosities (Cape: London), and is certainly outrageous by anyone’s definition.

Here at Black Scat we’re planning a new Thanksgiving tradition—reading The Wonderful Wizard of Sade at the dinner table.

If you have the stomach for it, we suggest you purchase a copy now as Sade is limited to 50 copies and there won’t be leftovers.

And may we suggest Tom Whalen‘s wickedly surreal DOLL WITH CHILI PEPPER—just released in our Absurdist Texts & Documents series. Whalen’s disquieting dolls come alive in a Parisian cinema haunted, it seems, by the dreams of Sade, Gogol, Baudelaire, and Bellmer. The author’s previous award-winning book Dolls—an exploration of these consorts from childhood—was described by Sven Birkerts as “malign and unsettling and darkly outré.”

We believe readers will find this new volume even more transgressive.

Leigh began issuing his handmade, limited edition Xmas catalogues in the U.K. in the late 80s through the 90’s and “into the early Noughties.” Each booklet was approximately 16-pages folded from one A4 double-sided sheet, published in an editions of 100 copies and distributed to family, friends and mail art chums. “They are based on those tacky little brochures that appear at that time of year, particularly to advertise all manner of useless festive crap — gadgets for trimming fluff from jumpers, musical key fobs, big slippers for both feet, etc.” The artist has selected the best of these hilarious items for this special anthology.
