Victorian Vice

We’re pleased to announce the publication of VICTORIAN VICE, a new anthology featuring excerpts from the Classics of Passion series. It includes selections from some of the Victorian era’s most notorious works,  such as the infamous underground journal The Pearl; Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s startling novel Venus in Furs; “The New Pleasure” by Pierre Louÿs; as well as anonymous texts that became scandalous  sensations.

Victorian scholar Lawrence Hamilton has compiled this connoisseur’s sampler of  literature’s “forbidden pleasures” — over two hundred pages of naughty nostalgia.

Eye-Opening New Novel

When Natalie Ryder signs up to participate in a confidential study of female sexuality, it seems like a dream come true—generous financial compensation, a luxurious private house outside of Toronto, and a personal driver. The only catch: she must keep the study secret from her best friend Rachel. Then she meets Michael and Suzanne and things become more complicated… and dangerous.

“…an erotic thriller of voyeurism, repression, domination, and submission written in a fast-paced prose distinct for its minute evocations of masturbatory thrills. Singular in its dialectic between looking and being looked at, and in its urgency about sexual release, the novel retains a rare claustrophobia of sexual obsession, a flashback to Kafka if he had written erotica.”  —Eurydice

“THE OBSERVATORY is a voyeuristic telling of the burgeoning discovery of a woman’s sexual desires, yet in a quiet, sensually innocent way. The story is at once sexy and sultry, yet a journey of self-revelation. The reader is repeatedly aroused, craving and desiring Natalie, our beautiful protagonist, but also caring for her. She is at once delicate, yet has a steely core reserved for only the mightiest of heroines.”  —Vera Jones

WHAT DO BURROUGHS, BIERCE, HAMMETT AND CHANDLER HAVE IN COMMON?

DISORDERED SOULS,  Tom Bussmann‘s audacious new collection of stories. It’s a sardonic and erotic Spoon River Anthology set in St. Louis. The real-life “disordered souls” who populate these tales include Ambrose Bierce, William S. Burroughs, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Fanny Hurst, Kate Chopin, Virginia Mayo,  and many others.

Using fictional first person accounts, Bussmann cleverly reveals the “forces of disorder and decline” that have raged around us.

DISORDERED SOULS is a devilish concoction ideal for reading in the hammock.

BACKLIST BEAUTIES: Hidden Gems

The infamous Victorian monthly magazine…

THE PEARL was published in London from July 1879 to December 1880 and was subsequently shut down by the authorities for publishing obscene literature. Each issue was devoted to explicit erotic stories, sex in high society, incest and flagellation, interspersed with ribald parodies, poems and limericks. This selection of the best of THE PEARL—over 330 pages— is drawn from its original 18 issues and provides a fascinating look at the secret obsessions  behind  the Puritan’s mask. Step inside and enjoy a raunchy romp through the Victorian underground.

Cool is here. Happy New Year!

Here is the first publication in English of the master humorist’s collection, Vive la vie! —  stories culled from the pages of Le Chat Noir, packed with madcap (and bawdy) tales of love, adultery, the supernatural, military life, and fake news. These texts are quintessentially Allaisian, spiked with absurd digressions, parenthetical asides, footnotes, puns,  jokes, military jargon, Parisian slang, neologisms, dog Latin, literary quotations, and other unmentionable forms of wordplay. American Book Review hailed Carla M. Wilson’s  first book,  IMPOSSIBLE CONVERSATIONS, as “profound.”  Now her focus turns to film in this dazzling new fiction collection: CURIOUS IMPOSSIBILITIES:. Taking her cue from French New Wave films of the 1960s, Film Noir, and classics from the ‘70s and ‘80s, Wilson constructs a series of homages to ten visionary directors: Fellini, Tarkovsky, Duras, Robbe-Grillet, Godard, Marker, Truffaut, Bergman, Welles, and Ershadi. Her “cinematic riffs” offer creative interpretations of their iconic films that broke stylistic boundaries using non-traditional techniques. ORDER NOW
