FIRST PUBLICATION IN ENGLISH

The Pope’s Mustard-Maker (Le Moutardier du pape) was the last work that Alfred Jarry finished, a few months before his death in 1907. It is a bawdy three-act farce loosely based on the medieval legend of Pope Joan, with a huge cast and lively songs bubbling with rhymes and wordplay.

Readers who know Jarry only from Ubu or his novels may be surprised that he wrote operettas, but his are fully Jarryesque, with his usual gusto for smutty jokes, legend, folklore, puns, wild invention, and popular theater. In his hands, Pope Joan becomes Jane, who runs off with her lover and disguises herself as pope. How will she pass inspection on the slotted chair? What will she do when her husband shows up? And has there ever been another production number celebrating the spiritual virtues of enemas?

A sublime translation from the French by Doug Skinner.

Eye-Opening New Novel

When Natalie Ryder signs up to participate in a confidential study of female sexuality, it seems like a dream come true—generous financial compensation, a luxurious private house outside of Toronto, and a personal driver. The only catch: she must keep the study secret from her best friend Rachel. Then she meets Michael and Suzanne and things become more complicated… and dangerous.

“…an erotic thriller of voyeurism, repression, domination, and submission written in a fast-paced prose distinct for its minute evocations of masturbatory thrills. Singular in its dialectic between looking and being looked at, and in its urgency about sexual release, the novel retains a rare claustrophobia of sexual obsession, a flashback to Kafka if he had written erotica.”  —Eurydice

“THE OBSERVATORY is a voyeuristic telling of the burgeoning discovery of a woman’s sexual desires, yet in a quiet, sensually innocent way. The story is at once sexy and sultry, yet a journey of self-revelation. The reader is repeatedly aroused, craving and desiring Natalie, our beautiful protagonist, but also caring for her. She is at once delicate, yet has a steely core reserved for only the mightiest of heroines.”  —Vera Jones
